How You Can Use Terpenes to Control Your High: Part 1

How You Can Use Terpenes to Control Your High: Part 1

When you’re not all that familiar with smoking weed, you often don’t know what to expect with the strain you have. Sometimes you might smoke a strain that makes you feel relaxed like Bubba Kush when you need motivation to get up and be active. Other times, you might take bong rips of an energetic sativa like Green Crack, when you meant to be settling down for the night. Next thing you know it’s 3 am and you're trying to learn how to play the theme song to Fraggle Rock on the bass guitar. Don’t worry, we’ve all been there. There are ways that you can use the science behind cannabis to control your high. That’s right, I’m talking about terpenes.

Remind Me Again What Terpenes Are?

Terpenes are in short, the oils in cannabis plants that give them their different aromas and flavors. As it stands we know more about terpenes than we did when I started smoking weed. There is still a lot that we don’t know about them, but we are learning more all the time. For instance, did you know that a strain like Lemon Haze gets its delightful citrusy aroma from a terpene called Limonene? There are other terpenes as well, such as Myrcene, Linalool, and Pinene.

This is Not All Terpenes Do

Terpenes do not only give cannabis plants their flavor and aroma, they also affect the type of high you get. You can control the high that you get by researching which strains have the terpenes with the desired effect you want. Using this information you can get the most out of your cannabis and never smoke the wrong type of weed again!

I’m Looking For a Strain that Will Help Inflammation

The terpene Myrcene is great for helping treat inflammation, the root cause of many common health problems. Myrcene also works well as an antiseptic and an antifungal. A lot of strains that are typically used for medical purposes contain Myrcene. Some popular strains that contain Myrcene are Blue Dream, Green Crack, and Granddaddy Purple.

I’m Looking for a Strain that Will Help Me Sleep

We’ve all experienced insomnia at one point and time. This can be intensely frustrating, especially when you have to work early the next morning. Insomnia can be caused by a number of things, including stress. This can lead to more stress, which of course makes your insomnia worse. Luckily the terpene Linalool is here to help. Linalool has effects that immediately calm and sedate the body, pretty much guaranteeing you a good night’s sleep. Popular strains with Linalool are Headband and Skywalker OG.

I Want a Strain that Will Make Me Happy

If you’re looking for a strain that will just make you feel elated and chill in general, then you should go for a strain with Limonene! Limonene is in some of your favorite strains like Super Lemon Haze, Sour Diesel and Trainwreck. Limonene is also great for treating depression, as well as anxiety.

There are so many more that we didn’t cover, and new ones being discovered all the time. We couldn’t possibly fit them all in here. More coming in Part 2!
