4 Things You Must Have Before You Start Baking

December 20, 2017

It’s the holidays, so you’re probably planning on doing some baking. Of course, by baking I mean baking some special goodies to bring to your holiday dinner. Before you start baking, there are some things you will need first.

First Make Sure You Have the Herbs

First and foremost, you need to make sure you have the right herbs, and by that…well you know what I mean. You have to make sure that you have the grass to spare because you will need more than you probably have on hand. Your standard batch of cannabutter typically calls for an ounce of dried flower and an ounce and a half of trim, so you may have to stock up. If you know anyone who grows, ask them to give you their leftover trim. Chances are they are not using it.

Have the Right Strain

You can’t start baking with just any herbs, you have to make sure that you use the right ones. If your recipe calls for nutmeg, then you wouldn’t substitute it for corriander, would you?  If you’re making cookies to help you fall asleep, then you’re not going to use an energetic sativa like Green Crack in your recipe. Research different strains you might want to use. This will also ensure you get the dosage right.

An Oven with a Timer

If you have an oven with a timer, then you already have a quarter of what you need to start baking. It’s seriously that simple. Make sure that when you do start baking, you’re going to have the kitchen to yourself for several hours. You’re going to make a huge mess, and if you have pissy roommates, you may want to wait until they’re at work or out of town for the weekend.

The Right Math

Before you start baking, it is especially important to make sure that you’ve got the right math. You have to get your dosages right, or you’re going to have a bad time. If you use too much green, you risk having a bad experience. You could end up getting way too high off of eating one edible and possibly give yourself a panic attack. On the other hand, if you don’t use enough you’ll end up with some seriously weak treats.

Lastly, You’ll Need Some Science

Before you start baking, I’ll need to ask you: Do you know what decarboxylation is? If you don’t then you should look up how to do it and/or bake with someone who does. You know why raw cannabis doesn’t get you high? It’s because it hasn’t been decarboxylated. As you may remember from biology or chemistry, decarboxylization is just a fancy term for heating something up. You’re removing a carboxyl group from the THC. You do it every time you light a bowl. My point is that you should research the basics before you jump in. Otherwise you might see a recipe call for a term that you’ve never heard of and feel completely lost.
