As a cannabis connoisseur, you’ve probably heard of both an ash-catcher and a precooler. On the surface they both look like the same thing, and most people (including myself) seem to use the two terms interchangeably. Is there a difference between an ash catcher and a pre-cooler? What is the difference (if there is any)?
What is an Ash Catcher or Pre-Cooler?
Simply put, an ash catcher or pre-cooler is an accessory you attach to your bong, in place of a bowl. They simply fit in the downstem of your bong. Some have built in bowls, others have separate bowls.
What do Ash Catchers/ Pre-Coolers do?
Ash catchers and pre-coolers essentially perform the same function, that is, they keep you from sucking ash into the bong and cool the hit as you inhale. As someone who hates sucking ash into their bong and having to clean it, ash catchers are a god send for me.
What Are Some Possible Differences?
If you ask people for the difference between an ash catcher and a pre-cooler, you’re likely to get many different responses. Let’s look at some of them now!
Ash Catchers Come With Built In Bowls
One of the differences I’ve seen people cite (including myself, at one point) is that ash catchers have built in bowls, whereas pre-coolers have separate bowls. This makes sense until you realize that this ROOR ash catcher comes with a separate bowl, and is marketed as an ash catcher, rather than a pre-cooler as one would expect. So there goes that difference.
Ash Catchers Don’t Require Water
Another feasible difference I have heard is that ash catchers do not require water, while pre-coolers do. This makes perfect sense when you think about it, because water is required to cool a hit whereas no water is required to catch ash. You’d think so, but no. Can you imagine using this ash catcher without water? It would not work in the slightest!
Ash Catchers Don’t Come With Percs
I’ve also heard that ash catchers do not come with percs, which again, makes a lot of sense. Why would an ash catcher come with a perc? Wouldn’t it get clogged to hell? Yes it would, but this ash catcher has a tree perc, so there goes that possible difference too!
Is There a Difference?
Is there a difference between an ash catcher and a pre-cooler. There does not appear to be one. If you can think of one, please let me know.
