So you want to start dabbing? I don’t blame you. Dabbing is amazing, and I’m not talking about that dopey dance move. I’m of course talking about getting the most out of your concentrates by vaporizing them through a bong. Figuring out what you need to start dabbing can be a bit of a chore, because you need a few things before you start. Consider this your handy guide to everything you need to start dabbing.
What You Need to Start Dabbing
First, You Need a Rig
First and foremost you need the bong, which in this case is called a dab rig. The biggest difference between a bong and a dab rig is that dab rigs are equipped with male joints rather than female ones (downstems) and instead of using a slider bowl, you use a nail or a banger (more details on those later). Dab rigs come in many shapes and sizes. Some are more like bubblers, others are closer to bongs. All are pretty neat. The one that’s right for you depends on your personal preference.
Second, You Need a Nail/Banger
Next, you will need a either a concentrate nail, or a banger to put your dabs on. Nails are long with a small flat platform for placing your dabs. They come in glass, quartz, ceramic, or titanium. Glass nails suck, they’re basically made to break almost as soon as you use them. For obvious reasons, titanium nails are the strongest, but you have to season them before you use them. Ceramic works pretty well; it’s not as strong as titanium, but ceramic nails are often medical grade, so you don’t have to season them.
Bangers are different from nails. They’re shaped more like buckets, and tend to be a crowd favorite. Bangers are made from quartz. People tend to like them because they are easier to deal with than a nail (especially a domed one), and can easily be combined with a carb cap. Oh, you don’t know what a carb cap is either? Ah hell, we’ll get to that. Bangers tend to break pretty easily if exposed to hot temperatures for too long, so don’t torch it!
Make sure that you have a good propane torch, which you will be using to heat your nail or banger. Pretty much any small propane torch will do. Make sure that you exercise caution when you’re using a propane torch.
Of course you’ll need dabbing tools. You need a dabber, which is a poker tool used to pick up concentrates and place them on the nail. You’ll use either glass or titanium. For beginners it’s best to find a dabber with a spoon at one end so you can more easily “scoop” your dabs.
You’ll need a container to keep your concentrates in, and silicone is your best bet here. Silicone is very durable, easy to clean, and your waxes don’t stick to it the way they do to other containers. Non stick containers make your life ten times easier. Trust me on this.
Some people insist that you don’t need a dome or a carb cap. These are optional, but you will lose some smoke if you don’t use one. On the other hand, you’ll lose some of the heat in the time it takes you to use a dome or carb cap. Think of it as a trade off. Personally I prefer to go domeless, but that’s just me.
So that’s all you’ll need to start dabbing. Have fun!
