So you think you’re ready for your first grow. You know what strains you want to grow, you’ve got a pretty good idea of where you’re going to grow. Hell, you’re already thinking about fat your harvest is going to be. Don’t get too far ahead of yourself. Before you begin your first grow, there are things you need first. I’m not just referring to things like grow lights, soil, etc. Make absolutely sure you have these things before you start your first grow.
Make Sure You Have a Place to Grow
First things first: do you have a place to grow? You’d be surprised how many aspiring growers don’t even think about this before getting all their equipment ready. They just figure they’ll grow in the back of the closet and everything will just work out. This is a recipe for disaster right here.
You’ve got some things to figure out first. For instance, cannabis plants grow in at different heights and widths. If you’re growing a bushy indica, then your closet with very little floor space isn’t going to work. If you’re growing a tall sativa, then the cupboard under the stairs isn’t going to work all that well either. Are you growing indoors or outdoors? If you’re planning on growing outdoors you’d better have a greenhouse set up.
Figure out your Lighting Situation
It is imperative that you figure out your lighting situation before you drop a bundle of cash on lights. What kind of lighting system would be optimal for your grow room. Lights are going to be the most important, and most expensive part of the setup for your first grow. Make sure you’re getting the right kind. Your best bet is to buy grow lights from a respected company that specializes in grow lights for cannabis.
Figure out what type of lights you want. Some people will warn you away from LED lights, but they’re really just fine for growing cannabis. They’re more energy efficient too, so they won’t run up your power bill. If you go with HPS lights you should know that while they’re cheaper than an LED setup, they will run up your power bill and you could end up paying more in the long term.
Don’t Forget about Ventilation Too!
Ventilation is extremely important to the growing process. Good plants can’t grow in an area with no ventilation, can they? Ventilation systems can be a bit tricky and costly, but the good news is that you don’t have to have a top of the line setup, especially for your first grow. At the very minimum you need to have at least two oscillating fans pointed at the tops and bottoms of your plants. This will keep the air flowing between the leaves and prevent it from getting stale in your grow room. Also, remember that warm air rises!
Don’t forget to plan out what you’re going to be growing in for your first grow. Are you going hydro, or growing in soil? For your first time, you should probably stick to soil because it’s easier to grow in. Any kind of soil should do except for Miracle Gro. Do not use Miracle Gro on your plants. Miracle Gro doesn’t have the right nutrients your plants need, and you will most likely end up killing them.
Are your Neighbors Cool?
If you’ve just moved into a new house and you want to start growing, this step might be the most important one. Before you begin your first grow you need to find out what you can about your new neighbors. This means you have to talk to them, as much as you may not want to. Find out what kind of people they are. Are they prone to calling the cops at the slightest noise outside, or are they more the type to mind their own business? Perhaps most importantly, how do they feel about cannabis? If you’ve got the former kind, it may be best to find somewhere else for your first grow.
As with all things, it’s best to do your research beforehand. The Marijuana Grow Bible would come in handy here.
