Why Your Leaves are Turning Yellow: Part 3

Reading time: 4 minutes

As you’ve learned from parts 1 and 2, there are many reasons why the leaves of your cannabis plants might be turning yellow. You could have a nitrogen deficiency, an infestation, or your lighting could be bad. Your plants could even be suffocating! If it’s none of these, then there are a few possibilities left.

You Could have Bud Rot

If your plants are turning yellow and you’ve ruled out things like poor air quality, pests, and nutrient deficiencies, then you probably have bud rot. Hopefully you caught it in the beginning stages!

Bud rot typically appears very quickly, and can happen as soon as overnight! Bud rot will usually appear on your main buds, which is why it’s important to inspect them thoroughly and often! Yellow leaves due to bud rot tend to fall out easily and usually right away. You can easily spot bud rot by looking for grey or brown mold growing on the inside of your leaf’s cola.

How Did I Get Bud Rot?

Bud rot is mold, so it’s caused by too much humidity in the air of your growing room, as well as a lack of air circulation. You could also be keeping the temperature in your growing room too low, as bud rot does the best in cooler environments 60-70℉ (15-21℃). Bud rot is more common in bushy, stocky plants, which are more likely to have circulation problems. This is especially common in bushy plants grown in a smaller space, such as a closet.

How Do I Treat Bud Rot?

You can treat bud rot by adjusting the humidity in your grow room. Bud rot thrives in 60% humidity, so you’ll want to keep your space at 50% humidity. Make sure that you address any circulation problems your plants might be experiencing. You may have to space them out a little more. You may want to consider trimming leaves from the bottom and middle of your plant to ensure your buds are receiving adequate light. Don’t worry about those lost leaves, they were not helping you out in the first place.

Make sure that you are keeping your grow room at a warmer temperature of at or above 70℉ or 20℃. If you’re growing outdoors, take care to cover your plants during rainfall. Bud rot is most likely to occur on your biggest buds, so always keep a close eye on them! Lastly, make sure to remove all buds that have been affected, no matter how much you don’t want to. They will ruin your plant if you don’t take immediate action!

Poor Watering

A mistake that is especially common among beginning growers is overwatering plants. If your leaves are turning yellow, there is a good chance that you could be overwatering! Are your leaves super droopy, in addition to turning yellow? This is a pretty definite sign, especially if your plant seems like it is saturated with water. Overwatering is most common with plants in their early stages, particularly if you’re growing them in a large container to start out with.

Now you could also be underwatering them too! If you’re growing a larger plant in a small container, you are likely underwatering. If your leaves are droopy, and immediately seem to get better after you water, then you are defijnitely not watering enough.

How Do I Fix Over/Under Watering?

Luckily over watering is a mistake that is easy to correct! Make sure that you are watering according to the soil that you are using. For example, if you are using coco coir, then you should water every 1-2 days. If you’re using regular soil, it is good practice to poke your finger about an inch deep into the soil and water if it feels dry.
