The cultivation and possession of marijuana is now officially legalized in Maine, and the state has finally joined the league with Nevada, Massachusetts, California, Oregon, Alaska, Colorado, Washington D.C., and Washington State. For people wondering who is going to be the next to legalize marijuana, reports indicate that the lawmakers of Maryland are planning to pass two bills that will lift the ban on cannabis cultivation and selling across the state. If these bills are passed, there will be another reason for the residents to call Maryland the “Free State”.
In Maryland, the possession of marijuana is considered a civil offense if it is found in quantities less than 10 grams, and keeping more than 50 lbs is a felony, there are several medical programs in place as well. It shows that the Free State is following the footsteps of the other states that have lifted the marijuana ban. The prohibition would have been well on its way to its end by now, but Maryland residents need to take solid legal steps to stop the War on Weed that is currently going on in the state. However, it is not long before the politicians get the wheel turning for cannabis legalization, as 61 percent of Marylanders have voted in its support.
Arizona and Michigan are the two states that succeeded in starting the initiative of ending prohibition on weed last November, and are considered to be the ideal candidates for enforcing legalization laws by the year 2020. In order to get the ball rolling, 60 percent votes are required to begin the initiative process. However, Florida has got over 71 percent votes for allowing the use of cannabis for medicinal purposes only in 2016, which is a great initiative in support of the Sunshine State to have completely legalized marijuana by 2020 as well.
The question remains: which state is going to be next to legalize marijuana? It is difficult to pick out a single state, but with such great progress being made, one thing is for sure: we won’t have to wait long to find out. So as long as Jeff Sessions, Trump’s attorney general nominee, doesn’t puts obstacles in the way, just in a few years, cannabis will be completely legalized and take form of a budding industry in the United States. The federal government should brace itself, as they are going to have their hands full for coping with the rising tide of marijuana freedom.
