Although even in the cleanest grow environment, pathogens can inevitably appear. Using quality products are effective in preventing any occurrences or controlling and removing if the infestation happens.

Crops are in constant threat given that there are more than several millions of species of fungi all over the world. Microscopic fungal spores constantly drift in the surroundings, just waiting for a chance to take hold of any plants. These spores can induce root rot, mold and other crippling plant diseases if given the right growing conditions. Needless to say, it is vital to thoroughly comprehend treatment approaches to keep these diseases at bay.

Even though fungi are the usual pathogen that causes trouble to most growers, there are other potential threats that need to be acknowledged as well.

Physan 20 Fungicide Virucide Algaecide

Physan 20 Fungicide Virucide AlgaecideEPA approved, Physan 20 is a unique germicidal agent concentrate formulated to provide overall protection for plants and greenhouses. It is a broad range disinfectant, fungicide, virucide, and algaecide which effectively controls a wide variety of pathogens on hard surfaces and plants.

Physan 20 controls disease-spreading organisms which can be carried from plant to plant by using contaminated pots, flats, seed beds, soil, tools and human hands.

Applications include greenhouses; hard surfaces; lawn and turf grass; seedlings and cut flowers and plants. It poses no human or environmental risk when used according to label instructions and at recommended use levels.

As a Reservoir Preventative

Added to the hydroponic reservoir, Physan 20 can prevent pathogen growth in the reservoir. A starting rate of 1 teaspoon per 50 gallons of water is recommended and if needed, can increase up to 3 teaspoons per gallon. This maintenance program should be employed every 7-10 days.

For Seeds, Seedlings, and Cut Flower

Using Physan 20 can prevent the growth of algae, bacterial and fungal pathogens which can harm seeds, seedlings, and cut flowers.

To eliminate stem plugging which restricts uptake of water and to control bacteria and fungi which create ethylene gas, a cause of petal drop, flower spikes should be hardened by keeping the stems in Physan 20 solution during harvesting, storage, and shipping. Use 1 teaspoon of Physan 20 concentrate in 1 gallon of water.

If a garden soil is used for planting seedlings, saturate the soil completely in Physan 20. To do that, place the soil in a pot or tray, and then add Physan 20 solution until it completely covers the soil. Allow the solution to penetrate the soil before pouring off excess. Use 1-1/2 teaspoons of Physan 20 concentrate per gallon of water.

Physan 20 can stop the spread of damping off when sprayed on seedlings. Spray seedlings so that all surfaces are thoroughly wet. Use 2 tablespoons of Physan 20 concentrate in 3 gallons of water (or 2 tablespoons per gallon).

Algae Control on Soil

Physan 20 can be used as a soil drench to control the growth of algae and pathogens in soil.

If plants are not present in the soil, use1 tablespoon of Physan 20 concentrate in 1 gallon of water. Do not get any solution on the leaves of plants.

If plants or seedlings are present, and algae are seen on the surface of the soil, a more dilute solution must be used. Use 1 1/2 teaspoons of Physan 20 concentrate in 1 gallon of water. Spray so that surface of the soil is thoroughly wet.

Greenhouse Disinfectant

Disinfecting greenhouses with Physan 20 can prevent the development of disease and kill algae that may form on system surfaces and substrates.

Physan 20 is a liquid concentrate and must be extensively diluted for hydroponic applications. This means that in some cases, only a drop or two of the concentrate will be required in a volume of water to create the correct dilution. Do not be tempted to use more Physan 20 than directed and always measure when mixing and never estimate by eye the amount added to the water.

Cleaning Hydroponic Systems Between Crops

Physan 20 Fungicide Virucide AlgaecidePhysan 20 is an excellent product to use to clean and disinfect the entire system between crops. It can be used on plastics, metal, and glass surfaces, and is safe to run through delicate pumps and meshes.

Mix 1 tablespoon Physan 20 in a gallon of water to create a disinfecting solution. This may be used to apply directly to hard surfaces via a spray bottle or clean sponge. The wet surface should be scrubbed if visible dirt or algae are present. Make sure the surface remains wet for 10 minutes to ensure killing of all organisms. May also run this dilution through the hydroponic system to clean and disinfect it.

Physan 20 contains a foaming agent. At this dilution, foaming can be noticed if the product is run through the system and aeration. This foam is harmless. If it is particularly bothersome, a commercially available de-foaming agent may be used.

The instruction booklet state that Physan 20 should not be used in “irrigation systems”. This wording refers only to open irrigation systems that dump water into ponds, lakes, or any fish bearing water. Physan 20 is toxic to fish as it coats their gills and interferes with their breathing. However, hydroponic systems are considered closed irrigation systems that do not endanger fish hence, Physan 20 can be used in this closed system.

Algae Control on Rock Wool and other Substrates

Physan 20 Fungicide Virucide AlgaecidePhysan 20 can be used to treat rock wool and other growing substrates to eliminate algae both between crops and in the presence of plants. Different dilutions for each of these applications must be used.

Between crops to treat algae

Make a dilute solution by adding 1 tablespoon of Physan 20 to a gallon of water. Soak the cubes in this solution for 10 minutes, remove cubes and let dry. Do not plant in the cubes for 7 days. This allows for a complete kill of algae and a breakdown of the Physan 20 active ingredients so that tender plants are not harmed upon planting.

Already planted to treat algae

Make a dilute solution by adding 1-1/2 teaspoons of Physan 20 to a gallon of water. Put in a sprayer bottle and spray the surface of the rock wool substrate where algae are present. Let the sprayed surface remain wet for 10 minutes. May also use this same dilution to spray the entire plant as well as the affected surfaces for complete pathogen control. If algae persist, apply again in the same manner in 7 days. Measure carefully and do not increase the concentration, as crop damage can occur.

Adding to Nutrient Solutions

Adding Physan 20 to organic nutrient solutions may reduce or negate completely its algae and pathogen-killing capabilities. Being a pH neutral, its addition will not change the pH of the nutrient solution. However, it should be considered that tender root systems are potentially at risk from a continual bath of its solution. Due to the unknown nutrients specifically used on the crops, no guidance can be given regarding the combination of Physan 20 with nutrients.

As a Foliar Spray for Pathogen Control
