According to a recent research study conducted by the academics at the University of New Mexico, marijuana might be an effective therapy option for schizophrenia. The study was published in a peer-reviewed journal MEDICINES and conducted by the University’s department of psychology.
It is important to mention that the research is not only centered on the effects of cannabis on the disease. The researchers have also studied how environmental factors and auto-immune activity impact schizophrenia profiles.
Cannabis and Schizophrenia
Researchers actually studied the effects of marijuana therapy on the regulations of immunological activity. After accessing its results, they have inferred that cannabis can prove to be effective for schizophrenic patients when used with other medications or as a standalone therapy.
Phytocannabinoid, one of the hundreds of cannabinoids present in the cannabis plant, is the substance studied for schizophrenic conditions as an adjunctive or primary therapy. Research has also declared the consumption of Phytocannabinoid-based drugs safe for the patients suffering from this mental disorder.
Schizophrenia is one of those mental illnesses which medical sciences have failed to understand in its entirety. The actual etiology of this mental condition is still being studied. However, scientists suggest environmental, neuroinflammatory and autoimmune issues as the most probable causes of schizophrenia.
The report also mentions that nearly 0.5 percent of the world population is suffering from some form of schizophrenia. The majority of patients resort to conventional pharmaceutical treatments that often fail to treat the condition effectively.
CBD Also Contains Therapeutic Quality for Schizophrenia
Before this study, several research projects have been carried out to study the effects of other cannabinoids on this neurological disease which the report also brought up. For instance, some past research suggests that CBD (another cannabinoid) is also effective in treating schizophrenic conditions.
CBD is known to treat inflammatory conditions. This means it can also deal with the neuroinflammatory causes of the disease. In addition, its ability to bind with the endocannabinoid system also promises an effective treatment as compared to the use of highly potent tranquilizers containing some serious side effects.
However, not all ingredients of cannabis plants contain therapeutic effects for the condition. For instance, some data indicate that the psychoactive cannabinoid THC can worsen the symptoms of schizophrenia. With ongoing research on medical cannabis and the availability of CBD-based products in legal MMJ stores, it is not really difficult to remove the THC content of cannabis strain.
Schizophrenia entails a mental state where the affected people experience a severe alteration in how they think, feel and behave. The exact reason why this disease develops in the first place is yet to be found. Due to the obscurity surrounding the disease, scientists have failed to come up with an effective treatment for this mental condition.
All the ill-tolerated pharmaceutical options are just used to alleviate the symptoms of the condition. With cannabis emerging as an effective treatment for schizophrenia, there is a glimmer of hope for patients suffering from this debilitating disease.
