What Is CBD Oil?

CBD refers to a specific cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant family. This is the family to which hemp and marijuana belong. Hemp has very little THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) but a lot of CBD (cannabidiol). The reverse is true for most marijuana (high in THC, low in CBD). The prohibition of marijuana has a lot to do with its high content of THC, which is the psychoactive cannabinoid.

Why does CBD matter?

The CBD content of cannabis plants can help people who suffer from various conditions, such as nausea, HIV, and infections that don’t respond to antibiotics. It’s also said to relieve stress and many other conditions. CBD can even help you relax and fall asleep sooner if you have difficulty sleeping.

Why getting CBD Oil may be difficult

You would imagine that a product with such diverse health benefits would be easy to access around the country, but this isn’t always the case. Many people still don’t know that CBD oil and marijuana oil are two distinct substances. To make matters worse, the laws in some jurisdictions have not been modified to reflect the federal legalization of industrial hemp and its products. These issues combine to make it difficult to get CBD oil in some states.

The history of CBD oil legalization in Indianapolis

Governor Eric Holcomb signed a law in March this year legalizing CBD oil with a low THC content (less than 0.3 percent). The law stipulated various labeling requirements that all CBD products must adhere to in order to be allowed on the Indiana market.

What does this mean for you?

You can expect to see labels stating the concentration of CBD and THC. Products will also be tested by the state regulator to verify the information on that label. These measures were enacted because CBD oil from marijuana is illegal in Indiana. Therefore, anyone who tests positive for THC in their system faces serious penalties, like jail time or hefty fines. This is important because CBD oil with THC in it could potentially cause someone to fail a drug test.

What the law didn’t mention is anything about producing CBD oil within the state.

The current legality of CBD Oil in Indianapolis

CBD oil extracted from hemp can be sold, bought, or used by anyone in Indianapolis and throughout the state. The legalization of hemp by the federal government paved the way for Indiana to amend its laws to allow hemp and its products to access the Indiana market.

Why growing your own CBD oil is not an option

Now that we know CBD from hemp is legal in Indianapolis, you may think it’s a good idea to take this a step further and grow your own plants to extract CBD from. There are three problems with this.

Grow CBD oil not an option

First, hemp has only recently become legal, so finding a source of good seeds or clones for the purpose of your small home grow operation will be tough.  Plus, growing marijuana to extract CBD oil is not a great idea either, because most marijuana has very little CBD. You’d have to grow multiple plants – more than is safe in even a legal state – to obtain a decent amount of CBD.

Second, the prohibition of marijuana also causes more legal hurdles. So far, no law outlines how low-THC CBD oil can be extracted in Indianapolis. This means that there’s a risk that you may be caught on the wrong side of the law since the acceptable procedure hasn’t been spelled out.

Third, your entire reason for growing plants for CBD oil extraction is to obtain oil that is usable for wellness purposes. The question is, do you have a way to measure if your oil has enough CBD to be beneficial? You need advanced equipment for that, and that equipment is so expensive that it would never be worth buying as an individual grower.

Where to buy CBD oil in Indianapolis

CBD is legal throughout the state, and there is no shortage of brick-and-mortar shops where you can buy it. Gas stations, specialized CBD shops, salons, and even big box stores all carry CBD products in Indianapolis.

However, since CBD products are relatively new to the market, you need to do a lot of research before selecting a product. It isn’t easy or convenient to do this research in the store itself. For example, the kid working at the gas station probably won’t have any useful information or know anything about the quality of the product.
