How to start a commercial grow operation in Ohio

Ohio is still drafting its medical marijuana legislation. As a result, there are no concrete rules about the actual number of marijuana growing operation entities that will be allowed. The only available information is that there are provisions for around 60 businesses and 24 growing operation facilities. In fact, 24 growing operation facilities will be awarded licensed in November of 2017. Now we wait to see when the application period will open up again after that.

In this article, you can find details on Ohio’s medical marijuana program, the license requirements and the fees associated with starting a marijuana grow operation in Ohio. The application period is closed at the moment, but, of course, it’s good to be prepared for the next time it opens, whenever that may be.

Authorization on the creation of new medical marijuana rules was given on June 9th, 2016, when Ohio Governor Kasich signed HB 523 into law, authorizing the creation of a new medical marijuana framework in Ohio. In April 2017, the Phase I Cultivator Application was released.

Ohio is rolling out its medical marijuana program, and it is expected to be operational by September 8, 2018. In June of 2017, dozens of applications were received for the state’s two types of cultivation licenses. Ohio regulators decided on those applications in November of 2017. A total of 24 growing operation licenses is expected to be issued by the state.

Marijuana businesses and industry profit in Ohio

Currently, there is no set number of growing operations, and no marijuana businesses are operating in the state. Medical sales of marijuana in Ohio are expected to surpass $225,500,000 by 2021.

    License requirements

The requirements for a license can change at any moment, so potential applicants are encouraged to check with the Board of Pharmacy. Completed and submitted growing operation license applications are reviewed by that agency and awarded on a competitive basis based on pre-defined criteria. Applicants must provide the proof of their qualifications. The State Board of Pharmacy may issue up to forty provisional licenses until September 8th, 2018,

For cultivators, the license includes two levels which classify them according to the size of their grow operation. Level I cultivators can operate an area up to 25,000 square feet, while Level II cultivators can grow in an area of max. 3,000 square feet.

After September 8, 2018, the State Board of Pharmacy will set some additional criteria to consider, including the population of this state, the number of patients seeking to use medical marijuana and the geographic distribution of growing operation sites in an effort to ensure patient access to medical marijuana.

It can take time to start any business, and a marijuana one is no exception. You’ll need time to get finances in order, acquire the necessary licenses and line up employees and suppliers. Allow at least a year, perhaps more, for this process.
