CBD is marijuana extract that is used to treat a number of medical ailments one of which is seizures. Since its use has been widely embraced by law makers throughout many US states, Wisconsin was the most recent state where lawmakers were moving towards a more favorable law when it came to the use of CBD and marijuana in general.
The policymaker’s openness to the use of CBD, backed by the people bore fruitation recently as the Wisconsin senate has finally passed a bill that makes it legal to possess cannibidiol oil or marijuana extract, also known as CBD. According to reports, the bill that was on a slow burner for quite a while was finally approved which legalizes the possession of CBD, but only with a doctor’s certificate. According to insiders, the Wisconsin chamber adopted the bill on a 31-1 vote.
CBD is a drug that is derived from marijuana and is used by doctors for ailments such as seizures. Advocates that were pushing for the bill to get passes say that CBD oil is used to treat mostly children who suffer from seizures. But, the passing of the controversial bill did not come with its share of critics. After the news of the passing of the new bill spread, some critics argued that allowing Wisconsin residents to get the cannabis extract from their doctor will take people one step closer to using marijuana illegally, and also takes the senate one step closer to legalizing the use of medical marijuana, a bill that has been severely criticized by some lawmakers.
According to Democrat Senator Bob Wirch, the passing of the bill has nothing to do with any marijuana conspiracy since the bill was asked for by parents of children who were suffering from seizures. Others have a different view. According to Republican Senator Duey Stroebel, legalizing the use of CBD is a matter of Federal Law, noting that the marijuana extract is currently considered to be illegal by the Federal Government. The senator believes that the FDA should continue to carry out research on the extract in the same way as pharmaceutical companies do before reaching a conclusion.
But, Republican State Senator Van Wanggaard who was the sponsor of the bill says that efforts are currently underway to address the legality issue of CBD oil at a federal level, while the new bill which has been passed will allow families to get access to the drug for their children. Even with the new CBD-only bill being passed by Senate, there are many who argue that the bill does not go far enough, by only legalizing the use of CBD oil and not marijuana, which was also on the table. For now, marijuana use remains illegal in Wisconsin and so does importing the oil into the State. Democratic Senator Chris Larson tried to amend the bill to legalize the production of the CBD oil within Wisconsin but that died since many Republicans thought that it would lead to a full scale legalization of marijuana.
As of now, the bill is not headed to state assembly.
