For years, Montana has been an oasis for marijuana lovers in the northwest half of the United States. Unless you get past Idaho or head east to Minnesota, you’re somewhat in a weed dead zone. Now, Montana has taken even more steps to bring marijuana to the region. In November 2020, Montana voters approved Initiatives 190 and 118 making it legal for adults to purchase, possess, consume, and grow cannabis. House Bill (HB) 701 was signed into law in May 2021 legalizing adult-use marijuana.
Montana also has an existing medical marijuana program for patients with approved conditions. Patients may possess up to an ounce of marijuana and grow up to eight plants, with four mature plants at one time. Caregivers can also grow cannabis for patients, as long as they do not charge for their services.
